Piano Theory

Here I'll try to display most, if not all of the musical/piano I've learnt thus far. I'll do my best lay out the information in a way that even total beginners with no prior musical background could understand. Hope you'll find this page beneficial:)

Right then...let's get started, shall we?

*********************************************************

Level 0

Before we even start naming the keys on our beloved pianos or keyboards, let us first have a listen to a tune the majority of us should be familiar with -- I'm hoping;) If you are not familiar with this tune, have a listen to it a couple of times and try to memorise it, 'cause we're going to hear it a LOT.

Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-High Do-Ti-La-So-Fa-Mi-Re-Do
(Click on the link above to watch the video. Frakly I would have preferred a simple audio clip but Blogger doesn't seem to offer the option to upload one on a page):)

What you just heard (and saw) my friend, was a C major scale being played up (towards the right) the piano, and back down (to the left).

@: Like I mentioned before, I want to make this as beginner-friendly as possible, and so whenever you see this "@:", it's a side note for the total beginners, stating a musical fact that I would usually assume the majority of us know. This is just so the more advanced amongst you would know which portions to skip across;)

@: The pitch/frequency of the sound produced by pressing a key on your piano/keyboard increases as you move towards the right. In other words, if you pressed the key on the extreme left and pressed every key to the right of the prior key, until you reach the key on the extreme right, you'll find the sounds produced getting higher in pitch, one after another.

Now, try watching the video again, but this time, sing along to it.

Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do-Ti-La-So-Fa-Mi-Re-Do

The next video will start with a repeat of the first video you just saw, but will follow with 2 other major scales being played up and down again, much like the first video. Watch it once through first...

3 Major Scales

Now, watch it again -- but this time, sing along to each scale as it's being played (Do-Re-Mi...Mi-Re-Do).

Notice how similar each scale sounded while you sang them?
